Updating to minor versions of our extensions

Moving to a new minor version of our extensions (x.x.X third number changes, from version 1.2.1 to version 1.2.2 for example) is easy. Most of the time these versions only have bug fixes, small new features and improvements. You can view changes in a certain new version in the extensions changelog. You can update to new minor version of our extensions patch update (x.x.X) without hesitation. We do advise creating a backup with Akeeba Backup. Please note that when updating or upgrading all custom modifications you might have done will be lost unless you used Joomla! template or language overrides.

Updating to minor versions is simple, just install the new version over the old version with the Joomla! Extension Manager or use our built-in Live Update function!

Updating to major versions of our extensions

When updating to major versions you need to do a little investigation. Major releases almost always have large new features or changes which might impact your workflow or current installation. We advise reading the extensions changelog to see if these changes impact you in any way. In most cases we will also write a blog post about the new major release in our news section. Examples of updating to major releases are:

  • x.X.x second number changes, from version 1.2.1 to version 1.3.0
  • X.x.x first number changes, from version 1.2.1 to version 2.0.0

We always advise creating a backup with Akeeba Backup. Please note that when updating or upgrading all custom modifications you might have done will be lost unless you used Joomla! template or language overrides.

Updating to major versions is simple most of the times, if there are special things (like run a migration tool) you need to do we will clearly communicate that in the extension's download page.  Normally, just install the new version over the old version with the Joomla! Extension Manager or use our built-in Live Update function!

Updating to new major Joomla! versions

You can update to new Joomla! minor updates (x.x.X third number changes, from version 1.2.1 to version 1.2.2 for example) without hesitation. There are almost never conflicts between our extensions and new minor versions of Joomla!. We do advise creating a backup with Akeeba Backup.

Moving from Joomla! 2.5 to Joomla! 3.x for example should never be done without extensive testing and research. You will need to make sure that the current version of our extensions supports the new version of Joomla!. We clearly communicate the Joomla! version supported by our extension on our product pages and via news posts in our website news section. If migrating is not straightforward we will write a manual and publish a link below.
