Joomla Backward Compatibility plugin
Like mentioned in our Changelog – ccExtensions works with J!4 & J!5
In the case of J!5 the backward compatibility plugin is to be enabled to enhance backward compatibility with J!5 /J!4. (J!4 is no longer supported or recommended. It will continue to work, but without security updates.)
We try to keep our extensions compatible with Joomla 4 and 5 at the same time, due to the fact that quite a few users still have j4 / j5 websites or are users still in process of migrating. This is the reason we are still using previous versions of Joomla classes. Replacing all such classes may result in the lack of support for previous versions of Joomla!
Joomla! 5 will be supported until 2027. This backward compatibility plugin is needed till then. These classes or cases “cannot” be removed until J!6.
Most of J-prefixed classes can still be used. They were scheduled to be removed in J!5.0 but due to release cycle changes the removal has been postponed to J!6.0. Instead the code for creating class aliases has been moved to this Backward Compatibility plugin.
Currently we are updating these classes in the background. Compatibility testing & release for J!6 for the ccExtensions will only be performed after Joomla! 6.2. The reason is simple: we are waiting for the most stable version, which we expect to be after Joomla! 6.2.
Our planning includes testing extension compatibility on J5.4 first, which has been done & released in ccExtensions latest versions. This includes all extensions/plugins in use.
Then the focus is moved to J!6, but only with the more stable version, which we suspect will be J!6.3 + . In the meantime, it is still recommended to use the Joomla backward compatibility plugin. After compatibility update of our extensions with J!6.3+, we will indicate this on the website & in our changelog page when this will be no longer necessary.
In short :
ccExtensies are compatible and tested on Joomla 5.4
J!5.4 serves as a technical bridge for transfer to J!6
ccExtensies compatibility with Joomla! 6 is planned for after J!6.3 . Releases for the extensions will then follow.
Remains recommended -> Backward Compatibility enabled, till otherwise advised.
Note that all other plugins and extensions in use, will also need to be J!6 code compatible. Until then, it’s important to keep the backward compatibility plugin enabled.
We also keep an eye on the date until Joomla! 5 is no longer supported by Joomla itself and the BWC plugin is no longer required.
With our extensions release of compatibility with J!5.4, we also will no longer recommend J!4. It will continue to work, but without security updates or support.
For now keep this Backward Compatibility plugin enabled for our extensions as it quarantees that it is loaded before any other plugin is.
ccExtensions requires you to have this plugin enabled until otherwise advised. We will communicate accordingly.
Steps to be taken for extensions are -> Go to System – Manage – Plugins and enable the plugin ‘Behaviour – Backward Compatibility’. Make sure that its option ‘Classes Aliases’ is set to Yes. The plugin maps the old class names to their new equivalents.
